A new program aimed to share stories of recovery and consequence that result from substance abuse. Stories told by actual residents of Wayne County.
We recently sat down with Dana, a resident of Wayne County. She openly shared her story of drug abuse and recovery with us. She shares the serious consequences of drug abuse and candid advice to parents on what signs to look for. Her answers to some questions are below. She also openly allowed us to record her interview. Thank you Dana.
I wanted to be a vet or an elementary school teacher
What does it mean to you to stay drug free?
Complete and total abstinence. I won’t take anything that changes my mind or mood.
Have you been arrested? If so, what can you share about that experience?
Yes, not a very good experience but it saved my life because consequences are a great motivator for me and that’s when I asked to go to a treatment facility.
If you could advise someone thinking about starting to use drugs, what would you say to them?
Don’t even start because you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into.
How will you stay drug free?
Support groups, helping others, staying around a good group of people. There are things I have learned about the world, myself and how to live that I would have never learned if it wasn’t for the support groups and the people in my life today.
Is there anything else that you think is important to share?
To the parents, look for signs of withdraw from friends and school. Big changes in behavior.
